INSPIRATION BEHIND ISKAAN THE STORY
ISKAAN Foundation is deeply rooted in the values and life lessons that shaped me. The inspiration behind ISKAAN comes from my parents, Dr. J. L. Sarkar and Basana Sarkar, whose lives taught me that service to others is not merely an act of kindness, but a responsibility towards society.
My father, Dr. J. L. Sarkar, was a doctor whose commitment to service extended beyond his profession. His involvement in community work and his efforts towards the welfare of minority communities had a profound influence on me. Through his work, I developed a deeper understanding of the needs, challenges and aspirations of different communities, particularly those who often need greater support and opportunity.
His example showed me that one's profession can become a means of serving humanity, and that meaningful community work begins with understanding people, their circumstances and their needs.
My Mother, Basana Sarkar, contributed in a different but equally important way. She encouraged me, supported my journey and taught me to move forward with responsibility, compassion and a sense of purpose. Her encouragement gave me the strength to follow my path and taught me that caring for others and contributing to society are values that should remain a part of one's life.
Together, their influence shaped my understanding of humanity, community, responsibility and service.
My own journey of more than two decades in journalism and over fifteen years of social work, philanthropy and community engagement further deepened that understanding. Over the years, I have had the opportunity to listen to people, witness their struggles and engage closely with communities.
ISKAAN is a coming together of these values and experiences.
It is my effort to carry forward the spirit of service I learnt from my parents by bringing philanthropy, community service and social development together, supporting those in need, empowering communities and encouraging a greater sense of responsibility towards society.
DR. J. L. SARKAR
Doctor • Community Worker • Inspiration
Dr. J. L. Sarkar was a doctor whose commitment to service extended beyond his medical profession. Alongside his professional responsibilities, he was involved in community work and the welfare of minority communities.
His work gave me an early understanding of the importance of community welfare, inclusion and standing with people who need support and opportunity.
His life showed me that serving people is not limited to a profession or position. It is also about understanding communities, recognising their needs and contributing wherever one can.
His commitment to community service and the welfare of minority communities became an important influence on my own understanding of society and continues to be a part of the inspiration behind ISKAAN Foundation.
BASANA SARKAR
Mother • Guide • Source of Strength
Basana Sarkar played an equally important role in shaping the values that guide me.
She encouraged me, supported my journey and taught me to move forward with responsibility, compassion and a sense of purpose.
Her encouragement gave me the confidence to follow my own path and to remain committed to serving people and contributing to society.
Her influence taught me that responsibility towards others begins with empathy, understanding and the willingness to stand by people when they need support.
Her strength, guidance and encouragement remain a deeply personal part of the story behind ISKAAN Foundation.
THEIR VALUES & LEGACY
The values of Dr. J. L. Sarkar and Basana Sarkar continue to influence the spirit and purpose of ISKAAN Foundation.
From my father came a deeper understanding of community service, minority welfare and responsibility towards society. From my mother came the encouragement to serve with compassion, move forward with purpose and remain responsible towards others.
Together, their influence shaped a simple belief that continues to guide ISKAAN:
Compassion should lead to action.
Service should uphold dignity.
Responsibility towards society belongs to all of us.
ISKAAN Foundation is my effort to carry these values forward through service, philanthropy, community engagement and meaningful social development.
Inspired by their values. Guided by their example. Committed to serving society.
